At this part of Wellington’s waterfront, the manu is part jump, part local competition. The aim is not elegance. It is to hit the water hard and throw up the biggest splash, usually with a few people watching and judging from the edge. The platform has become an informal stage, shaped as much by the people who use it as by its original design.
