Louisiana opened in 1958 to give modern art a place in Denmark and to make it accessible beyond a narrow cultural elite. Its founder, Knud W. Jensen, asked architects Jørgen Bo and Wilhelm Wohlert to build around the existing country house, carefully integrating the museum with the terrain, trees and water. That idea is clearest in the quieter corners of the grounds, where architecture recedes into the landscape and looking at art becomes only one part of the experience.
